Queen of the Black Coast 6

  1. QUEEN OF THE BLACK COAST 6 - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears as Plate Six in my Conan art folio based on the story by Robert E. Howard, "QUEEN OF THE BLACK COAST". The folio was published by Bortner and Kruse in 1976.

When it came to working with black ink and a black color pencil on coquille board, there was no chance of erasing mistakes, every detail had to be worked out in the early pencil stage. In this picture my concern with making mistakes had to do with finishing the ghostly figure of Belit emerging between Conan and the winged ape. I took my time and did some very delicate shading to the lower part of her figure to show her ghostly transparency.
